The legacy of the BENEFIT-Med project

The BENEFIT-Med Final Meeting was held in Pavia on 22nd-23rd October 2025. The successful outputs of the project, validated through dedicated Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), represent the starting point of the novel projects PROSPER (https://www.prosper-horizon.eu/)  and FORECAST (https://www.forecast-project.eu/) led by UNIPV. The legacy of BENEFIT-Med is now in the hands of an extended network of multidisciplinary actors willing to bring the current innovation into novel agricultural systems across different climate-vulnerable sites in EU and extra-EU regions, merging basic and applied research to develop effective climate-smart strategies. The legacy of BENEFIT-Med resides not only in its scientific breakthroughs but also in fostering sustainable local enterprises to produce and distribute microbial inoculants, creating circular bioeconomy opportunities aligned with regional development goals. This holistic model highlights the integration of food security, environmental sustainability, and rural socio-economic resilience in the face of growing climate challenges. BENEFIT-Med provides the starting point for more expanded and in-depth investigations, to speed-up the transition towards sustainable agroecosystems based on highly resilient orphan legumes and innovative seed technology.
